1. DEFINITION
A noun refers to the name of a place, person, thing, animal or any abstract concept Nouns are words that tell what or who is being spoken about. Nouns are names or identifying words They identify places, persons and things
Examples:
Following are some examples of nouns.
- The sentence is divided into two parts.
- The balloon is red.
- The crow was perched on a branch.
- The river was deep.
II TYPES OF NOUNS
There are four types of nouns:
- Proper Nouns
- Common Nouns
- Collective Nouns
- Abstract Nouns
A. PROPER NOUNS:
A proper noun refers to a word that denotes the name of a particular person, place or thing Names of people, novelists, places, regions, countries, organisations, states, historical documents, events, works of literature, monuments, sites, religions, castes are all proper nouns.
Examples:
- I was in France during the French Revolution.
(Country: France: Historical event: French Revolution)
- Wachau is a valley in Austria that has a very picturesque landscape.
(Place: Wachau; Country: Austria)
- Melk Abbey is a tourist attraction.
(Place: Melk Abbey)
- Mr. Simon went away for a month.
(Person: Mr. Simon)
Exception:
There is one exception in the usage of proper nouns. A proper noun becomes a common noun when it is used to indicate a specific trait, quality, behaviour pattern or style.
Examples:
- He is a modern day Shakespeare
(The person mentioned above has the gift and a style of writing like (Shakespeare)
- He is the Einstein of this generation.
(The person mentioned above has the intellect of Einstein)
- He could be the next Dhoni.
(The person mentioned above has the quality of Dhoni, that is, he is a very good batsman.)
